In the fall of 2018, we bought a fixer upper in our hometown of Alabama and spent the next year working on it until we moved to Kentucky. After living in a fixer upper for a year, I can say it’s definitely not as fun or easy as they make it look on TV. But it is a very rewarding experience, and we learned a lot! Since I’m currently pregnant and not able to do a lot of projects or DIYs, I thought I would start sharing some of the projects we tackled, with lots of help from family and friends, in that house. One of the biggest transformations was in our little den, or “fireplace room” as I called it. Every inch in this room from the ceiling to the floor was worked on. We scraped the popcorn texture off of the ceilings and after seeing the condition of the sheetrock underneath, we decided to cover it with tongue and groove boards. We added the same boards to the wall behind the fireplace and painted it all, including the fireplace insert, in Benjamin Moore Simply White. The carpet was replaced with luxury vinyl plank flooring that continued into our dining room and kitchen. (I will share that before and after as well soon!). We also covered up the 80s style paneling on the header beam with a beautiful piece of poplar wood.
My plan for this room was to be a quiet sitting room to enjoy reading and a fire. We never got to completely enjoy it since we had projects going on in that part of the house pretty much the entire time we lived there. But we did enjoy our little coffee station in there and our Cowboy took many naps on the rug. I also had dreamed up how it would make a cute play area for our kids one day if we had stayed there. If you have a little extra room or even a nook somewhere in your house, think of creative ways you could use it to best serve your family during that season of life. Maybe you need an office … or craft room … exercise space … a homework station for your kids … a pet room … so many possibilities! It doesn’t have to be a huge space or completely separate room. Little nooks are my favorite!
