“As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longs after You
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You”
Martin Nystrom
I’m sure you’ve heard this song before, or maybe it’s just well known in my family because it’s one of my dad’s favorite songs. Within moments of me being born, my dad was singing this to me. And although I don’t remember that particular time, I remember many times after that. I wasn’t the greatest sleeper when I was younger. I always had a hard time falling asleep at night, so my parents would sing me this song to try to help calm me to sleep. While going through different ideas for what I should name this blog, “as the deer” kept coming to mind. I wanted it to be something that pointed to Christ and that was also special to me.

The words that come from Psalm 42 can bring us comfort in resting in God. He is our strength and shield. He is our heart’s desire and worthy of our worship. Like deer search for water for refreshment and to be filled, we long for God to do the same in our lives and He will .. through His son Jesus Christ, our living water. Being near water and listening to it’s calming sound has always brought me peace. I was reminded of this while at my parent’s farm during Christmas when we would take walks down to the creek. I love the sound and watching the water flow over the rocks. Psalm 23:2 says, “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” I’m praying as we begin this new year that I will be intentional about resting in God and allowing Him to lead me beside still waters. I hope that you will too .. however that may look in your life!

What an inspirational way to begin 2020 Ashley. You remind me of what’s most valuable in this world…the Peace of the Lord! Thank you.
